OUR GOAL

DMS is a healthcare services company with two operating teams: Medical Staffing and Home Care.  Our Home Care division provides compassionate and trusted in-home care to the elderly and disabled.  Our Healthcare Staffing division provides per diem and contract staff to hospitals, skilled and long-term care facilities, clinics and medical practices.

DMS is devoted to providing and maintaining a strong company culture that focuses on not only our clients but also our employees. Though most of our employees are out and about making a difference in medical and home care settings, they are highly valued employees and receive the same treatment as the employees in our office.

ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM

Charlie Ferro

President and Owner

Charlie and his wife Kristin have been the owners of DMS since 2008. Being a business owner has completely transformed his life. It is an honor, privilege and huge responsibility to manage DMS properly as so many lives are dependent on the successful daily operation of it. Charlie thrives in it and truly enjoys the daily challenge. Charlie has 3 kids who he loves spending time with and can’t get enough of.

Tessa VanderVeen

Human Resource Manager

Tessa started her career in Nashville, TN as a Recruiter for a healthcare staffing company, and joined DMS in 2015. Her background has been in recruiting/HR and mainly in the healthcare industry. Tessa is the HR Generalist at DMS where she is responsible for the day to day tasks of all aspects of HR and overall support to all DMS employees. Tessa was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. She graduated from Hope College with a Communication degree. Tessa enjoys spending time with family, camping, traveling, cooking, biking, and walking her 8-year-old golden retriever named Loki. Some of her favorite vacations include camping up north with her family and relaxing on the beach in Florida. She has a knack for health, wellness, and fitness. Tessa is passionate about making a difference in people’s lives. When Tessa is not working, you can find her hanging out with friends and family.

Motto: Life is too short to miss out on being really happy.

What most excites you about your work and the contribution you can make? I love helping and working with people. Teamwork is super important to me and I am so excited to be a part of the DMS team. I look forward to helping support this company in any way I can.

Nick Howell

Human Resource Generalist

Nick graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in Human Resources Management and joined the DMS team in May of 2017. Nick’s role as the Recruiting Assistant is to assist with the successful recruitment and onboarding of new hires. Some of his duties include assisting with phone screens, conducting new hire appointments, and managing the orientation process.

Nick is from Lansing, Michigan but currently resides in Grand Rapids. Some of his interests include physical fitness, sports, and enjoying quality time with loved ones. When he is not at work you can find Nick exercising, enjoying the outdoors, or exploring Beer City USA.

Nick’s passion has always been to make a positive difference in the lives of others. At DMS, he feels this opportunity is present each and every day through his work.

Loretta Fasel-Slater

Billing Specialist

Loretta joined DMS as a Billing Specialist in June 2017. She worked in various finance positions in skilled nursing facilities for over 20 years before transitioning to Home Care. After earning her Master’s Degree from Ferris State University, she relocated from Traverse City to Grandville for her first job in healthcare and has remained in the industry and the Grand Rapids area ever since.

When not working, you can find her spending time with her two grandchildren.

Most people don’t know that she was named after country singer Loretta Lynn. She was able to take her parents to see Loretta Lynn in concert in 2016.

Emily Potratz

Administrative Assistant

Emily has been a team member of DMS since 2014. Emily started off her career at DMS as a caregiver in 2014. Today, Emily is the Administrative Assistant at DMS where she supports the whole team. Emily is a great resource for questions and general support. She has a knack for organization and thinking outside the box. When Emily is not working, she spends her free time with her family. Emily has an inspiring preschooler named Eloise that keeps her busy. Her other main interests include reading, singing, and going to the beach. If she had to give up anything, it would be impossible for her to give up chocolate.

What surprised her most about DMS is how friendly and fun the environment is on a daily basis. While working at DMS, Emily has helped countless individuals in need: from clients to caregivers, and especially her colleagues.

RECRUITING TEAM

Becky Sharum

Senior Recruiter

Becky has been in the healthcare field for 18 years, over 6 of those with DMS. Becky is from Muskegon, Michigan but currently resides in the Grand Rapids area with her husband Tom. She has three children, including a set of twins, and one grandson. Her passion is helping people make a difference in their lives, which she does in her role as a recruiter. Becky realizes sometimes people just need a little assistance with their career and takes her position with DMS very seriously.

In her spare time, she enjoys the outdoors and lives for summer! She and her husband spend a lot of the summer camping and boating. In addition, she enjoys kayaking, biking, and hiking. Her other hobbies include reading, quilting, and scrapbooking. She is an avid hockey fan. During hockey season, you will find her in the seats of both the Detroit Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins games.

Ken Burns

Recruiter

Who is Kenneth James Burns, you ask? Further, how did he become Recruiting Specialist for DMS At Home? To understand the man and his journey, we must first go back in time. Ken was born in Grand Rapids, MI on Tuesday, February 14, 1984. He shares his Valentine’s birthday with late comedian Jack Benny, politician Michael Bloomberg, and most infamously, Rob Thomas, lead singer of Matchbox Twenty. By all accounts, Ken had a wonderful childhood.

As Recruiting Specialist, Ken is responsible for finding, interviewing, hiring and training all of the fresh new faces of DMS At Home.

In his free time, Ken loves to listen to music, watch movies, read, cook and relax with his family. Those that know him best will say that Ken is unique—especially his sense of humor. Ken loves to make people laugh and will quote lines from his favorite films at an alarming frequency. So the next time you’re around DMS, stop in and say hello to Mr. Burns.

Kathy Boone

Recruiting Assistant

Kathy Boone has been with DMS since 2017. Kathy brings over twenty years of HR and payroll experience to the corporate office. When Kathy isn’t working, she loves spending quality time with her young granddaughter and cheering on her Michigan Wolverines.

Don St. Andre

Medical Staffing Manager

Don started with DMS in 2014 and has been successful in various leadership positions in providing good business solutions and creating positive work environments by encouraging teams and individuals to flourish in small and large work environments.

Areas of HR expertise are recruiting/interviewing/selecting talent, orientation/onboarding/training and development, coaching/mentoring, performance management, succession planning, contract negotiation, grievance and arbitration proceeding experience, policy and procedure writing and execution, compensation and benefits, FMLA/ADA/STD, and Worker’s Compensation.

He very much enjoys recruiting, building, and leading teams with the best and brightest talent to achieve their personal goals, as well as the organization’s goals.

Denise Heyboer

Senior Client Services Specialist – Medical & Administrative

Denise has enjoyed working with DMS since she started in September 2008. She has witnessed the success and growth of the company over these years. When Denise started her journey with DMS, there were just four people working in the office. The growth and development of the company have been amazing and Denise is proud to be a part of this company.

Denise has made home decorating her hobby. She enjoys spending time creating new ideas at home with her husband, Nathan. Denise has two children of her own and two step-children. She enjoys spending time with her family and with her kids – especially now as they are older and they can travel and get out together and enjoy many of the same things!

Denise has an empathy and compassion for people of all ages. She feels it is very important to retain good team members and clients by coaching, directing (or re-directing), communicating effectively and often, and building a trust between her and her staff and clients. Denise has spent more than 20 years in the staffing and recruiting industry and feels it has been a successful and rewarding career for her!

When Denise is not working she is likely; exercising, taking road trips with her husband, cleaning, laying out by a lake or pool in the sunshine, home/yard decorating and gardening. She could also be caught kayaking or biking (which is her husband’s favorite exercise!).

An impossible item for Denise to give up would be…..hairspray!!

Funny people make her laugh!

Her kids and husband are her most treasured possessions!

One of her favorite vacation spots is in Cabo San Lucas.

Denise admires those who possess a warm smile and a gracious and genuine heart and demeanor.

Amanda Griffin

Client Services Specialist – LTC

Amanda grew up in the quaint town of Nashville, MI. She ventured to the west side to attend GVSU where she graduated with her degree in Health Professions. Amanda loves everything about the health field, especially the ever-changing needs and innovations. She currently resides in Jenison with her husband, rambunctious daughter and son, and their four children. Amanda’s free time consists of keeping up with her kids, going to the beach, enjoying movies and everything outside. We are delighted that Amanda decided to take her talents to Diversified Medical Staffing.

Kevin DeMann

Client Services Specialist

Kevin is a member of the Medical Staffing team and he joined the DMS team in 2016. Kevin works with long-term care facilities and clinics, among other things. Before working at DMS Kevin graduated from Baker College and with a degree in Health Services Administration and worked with local healthcare organizations during that time.

Kevin enjoys the opportunity to positively impact someone’s day and he is grateful for the chance to put a smile on someone’s face. One of Kevin’s favorite things about DMS is the great team atmosphere and the positive attitude of staff and co-workers. Kevin’s motto is “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do”. One quality that Kevin most admires in a person is a strong work ethic.

When not working, Kevin can be found outdoors enjoying time with family and friends. What most people don’t know about him is that he grew up on his family’s dairy farm and is the middle child with four siblings (he has an older brother and sister as well as a younger brother and sister).

 

HOME CARE TEAM

Theresa Wilson

Home Care Manager

Theresa joined DMS in 2013 and loves the connections she has made in the ‘senior community’ of Grand Rapids. She believes there is great work being done in West Michigan on behalf of seniors and the disabled and is thrilled to be a part of it.

What most excites you about your work and the contribution you can make?
It’s different every day! What a privilege it is to have a glimpse into the client’s world and to help ease the burdens they encounter.

Any volunteer activities you are involved with?
I volunteer through the Alzheimer’s Association and facilitate a monthly Caregiver Support Group. I am always humbled by the journey that these people walk with this illness. I teach Sunday School – love the little kids.

What most people don’t know about me is:
I am most at home when my feet are in the sand.

Laurie Brown

Client Care Coordinator

Laurie Brown is the home care Client Care Coordinator. In her role with DMS, Laurie will be overseeing all new, non-clinical home care clients. On a daily basis, Laurie will leverage the knowledge she has gained from her 35-year healthcare career-including her extensive background as an Occupational Therapy Assistant-as she manages and develops relationships with new and existing clients for DMS at Home.

What are you most passionate about?

Laurie is committed to providing superior quality of life to the elderly. She makes it her mission to treat everyone with respect and dignity.

What most people don’t know about me: “I used to be a cake decorator.”

Abigail Riggio

Staffing Specialist

Abby joined the DMS family in May. She grew up in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula but found her way to West Michigan to attend GVSU. In 2014, Abby earned her bachelor’s degree with double majors in Criminal Justice and Sociology.

As Scheduler, Abby is one of the primary points of contact for all things home care. To ensure a cohesive schedule for caregivers and clients, Abby is in constant communication–listening, supporting and providing superior customer service.

Wendy Robinson

Scheduler

Wendy Robinson is excited to be a part of the team at DMS. She has been a scheduler in home care settings for the last 25 years. Wendy loves the elderly and enjoys helping to make a difference in their lives.

Wendy grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She has been married for 17 years. She has two children, a daughter who is a senior in college and a son who is a sophomore in high school. In her free time, Wendy enjoys attending her children’s sporting events, spending time with friends and family and reading

Michelle Denard

Scheduler

Michelle joined DMS in June 2017 as a Home Care Scheduler. Michelle has extensive knowledge and experience in the home care field. Michelle’s hobbies include baking wonderful treats, cooking, and shopping. Michelle loves to spend her free time with her wonderful son.

Ken Miller, RN

Clinical Director

Ken Miller joined DMS in 2017 as the Clinical Director of DMS.

Nancy Christiansen, RN

Clinical Coordinator

Nancy is the Clinical Coordinator at DMS, her services provide skilled nursing care and assists in general operations of the home care department by assessing clients and creating care plans in compliance with DMS regulations and procedures. She has been with the company since 2009. Nancy’s duties also include assessing performance and providing education for the home care aides, problem solving. She wears many hats at DMS, as she will help wherever needed in both Home Care and Med Staffing.

Motto: Live, Laugh, Love. Don’t worry, be happy. If you watch your pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves. Be the best that you can be!

What are you most passionate about (professionally)?
It just warms my heart knowing that the elderly and handicapped are being able to stay in their own homes with help from DMS staff.

Interests/Hobbies?
Gardening, camping, kayaking – love exploring Michigan and the great outdoors in the summer!

What most people don’t know about me is:
I grew up on a strawberry farm.

Kendra Smith, LPN

Clinical Coordinator

Kendra Smith joined the DMS team in June 2017 as an LPN Clinical Coordinator.

PLUS CARE TEAM

 

Sue VerMerris

Clinical Supervisor

Sue VerMerris is the Clinical Supervisor at Heron Manor. She is challenged by overseeing the medical aspect of our residents. Furthermore, she does the assessments, lab draws, consults with physicians, families, and residents requiring their care and needs. Finally, Sue works with PLUS Care nurses on doing Medication Management and setting up weekly med boxes.
Sue has enjoyed working with the senior community for over 34 years. Her goal is to touch their lives and make a difference every day. She also realizes how important it is to work with the families of the Heron Manor residents and to be there to support them, as well.
Working for DMS has been a smooth fit as they also believe in achieving excellence. Sue has been impressed by the supportive and committed staff.
On a personal note, Sue and her husband Don of over forty years, have been blessed with three daughters, one son, and three son-in-laws’. Her reward is ten precious grandchildren. She is in her glory when they all come home. For Sue her family is important and she treasures being involved in their lives. Sue enjoys gardening, sewing, hiking, biking, entertaining and even golfing.

Nichole Smith

Plus Care Coordinator

Nichole joined the DMS team in June 2017 as the Plus Care Coordinator.

Lisa Smith, LPN

Lisa is our Plus Care LPN; she assists with general operations of the Plus Care Teambyassessing clinical results, providing education, scheduling, and resolving client issues.

LaTasha Thompson, LPN

LaTasha is our Plus Care LPN; she assists with general operations of the Plus Care Team by assessing clinical results, providing education, scheduling, and resolving client issues.

LaTasha is from Detroit and relocated to West Michigan in 1997 where she attended school at GRCC and Grand Valley State. LaTasha comes with 18 years of experience in the medical field and she has been a nurse for 10 years. LaTasha has a very active 12-year-old son who has divulged her into the biggest baseball fan. She stays consistently busy from his travel tournaments to the MLB. LaTasha is all about spending quality time with her family.
